How To Plan An Elopement : How to get a Marriage License in Hawaii

Dreaming of a destination wedding in the tropical paradise of Hawaii?

Before you say "I do" you'll need to secure a wedding license. And no one loves dealing with legal documents. So let me help you through the marriage license process.

This step-by-step guide is designed to make the process seamless for out-of-state visitors, ensuring your special day is legally recognized and stress-free.

How to Get a Marriage License in Hawaii

You don't need to be a Hawaii citizen or even a US citizen to get a marriage license in Hawaii.

Step 1:

Couples must first fill out a marriage application.

You can fill out the online marriage application form here.

**Keep in mind that this will expire in 30 days from the date of issuance so only apply 1 month in advance before your wedding.

This license will be valid on any/all Hawaiian islands.

Step 2:

Make an appointment with a state registered marriage license agent at least two weeks before you leave for your trip.

You can find a current list of marriage license agents here

Step 3:

Prepare the necessary documents to bring with you to the licensing office. Print out your marriage license application and bring with you to your appointment along with the following:

• $65 cash (unless you paid online already)

• Completed paper application or printed copy of the online application

• Government-Issued Photo IDs (Drivers License, Military ID or Passport are accepted)

• Both people that will be involved in the marriage or civil union must attend the marriage license appointment

• If previously married, proof of original divorce decree or death certificate only needs to be presented if the divorce or death was finalized within 30 days of applying for a marriage license.

Step 4:

Arrive at the scheduled appointment on time with all required documents.

Both partners need to be present during the application process.

The licensing office will review your paperwork and provide you with your marriage license once everything is in order.

Step 5:

Once your paperwork is approved you're all set for a legal marriage. So go get married!!

The state will give you documents you'll need to fill out the day of your wedding. Make sure you bring the documents to be signed by your officiant.

There is no waiting period in Hawaii so once your application is approved you can literally get married the same day. I don't recommend that though. I recommend arriving a few days before the day of your wedding ceremony to get this out of the way early to have less things to do on your actual wedding day.

PRO TIP: Immediately take a picture of your completed official marriage certificate with your cell phone. This is the only way I've heard of anyone recovering a lost marriage license - just incase - it happens!

Step 6:

File paperwork. Once it's been filed, the state will mail your marriage certificate document to the forwarding address you listed on the application within 4 to 6 weeks. You'll be given a temporary marriage license to use in the meantime.

PRO TIP: Ask your officiant / wedding performer to file this for you! This is a common request and now you've got one less thing to do.

Step 7:

Do a happy dance because you just made your marriage legal!

Where to get your legal Marriage Certificate

There is a state office on Oahu however on any of the other islands you'll need to go through a private license agent. Don't worry it's easy!!

State Office (Oahu)

Hawaii State Department of Health1250 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, HI 96813

- It is better to schedule an appointment ahead of time. You can schedule your appointment here

- This office accepts walk in appointments. Walk-ins are assisted based on availability until 3:00pm. There is sometimes a long wait so give yourself plenty of time.

License Agents (All Islands)

-Please see the state's list of license agents on any of the other Hawaiian Islands (Oahu, Maui, Big/Hawaii Island, and Kauai).

How much does a Marriage License Cost?

It costs $65.00 for a Marriage License in the state of Hawaii. This price includes the $60.00 application fee and a $5.00 processing fee.

Is it the same license on every island?

Yes. Once you receive your marriage license you can use it on any Hawaiian Island.

Is there a waiting period after we have our meeting with the agent?

No. You can get married right away!! Although we suggest making the appointment for at least the day before your ceremony so you'll have less to do that day.

Securing a wedding license in Hawaii as an out-of-state visitor doesn't have to be complicated. By following these steps and ensuring you have all the necessary documentation, you'll be well on your way to making your dream destination wedding a reality.
